Non-Period Signs You Should Call Your OBGYN

Most women know that if there is something irregular or concerning with their period, they should call their gynecologist. But don't forget — your period is just one part of your physiology. You should also be keeping an eye on your overall reproductive health, aside from your period. Here are some non-period-related signs you should call your OBGYN.

Vaginal Odors

It's not unusual for the vagina to have an odor. Every woman's odor is different, and some are more noticeable than others. However, if you notice a change in your own odor, this is a good reason to call your OBGYN. There is a chance the change is just due to to a change in diet or other lifestyle factors, but it could also be an early indicator of an infection or a pathological change in your hormone levels.

Itchiness

Sometimes when women feel itching "down there," they assume it's just the underwear they were wearing or the fact that they got sweaty and didn't shower right away. These are common causes of short-term itchiness. However, if you feel itchy for more than a day or two, there may be something more serious going on, such as a yeast infection or an STD. The cause may not be too serious, but your OBGYN can still get you the treatment you need for relief.

Painful Sex

You deserve to have comfortable, enjoyable sex. If sex is painful for you in any way, that is a good thing to let your OBGYN know. This can be a little embarrassing to talk about, but rest assured that your OBGYN is a professional and their job is not to judge you. Try to be as specific as possible when describing what the pain feels like, when you experience it, and where it hurts. Painful sex can be an indicator of early menopause, or it can mean you have something like a tumor or hormonal imbalance. Your OBGYN may prescribe a medication or cream to keep you more comfortable until they can get to the bottom of what's causing your pain and address that cause.

OBGYNs are well trained to diagnose and treat issues related to your period. However, that is not all they do, and you should feel comfortable contacting them about non-period issues, too. If you have been struggling with vaginal itchiness, a change in odor, or pain during sex, reach out to your OBGYN.
